![]() The two 18-hole courses were built with mechanized hazards: a snapping alligator, a monkey with a ball-swatting tail, a dinosaur using another monkey as a yo-yo. Unlike his earlier creations, most of Lee's Goofy Golf artwork is interactive, challenging players to putt through or around or into them. Lee was also ahead of his time when it came to actually knocking a ball around a miniature golf course. Goofy Golf was the first sports attraction that was fun to look at even if nobody was playing the sport. Traveling from Egypt to China requires only a few putts at Goofy Golf. All of Goofy Golf's biggest characters have colored light bulbs for eyes, and they glow at night. You can crawl inside a Chinese dragon or stick your arm out the nose of a Easter Island Tiki head. There are ancient monuments and space age icons, with a few monsters and aliens tossed in. ![]() Lee advertised Goofy Golf as "A World of Magic." It definitely looks otherworldly, showcasing a menagerie of wildly painted, thematically discombobulated giant figures built to grab attention from passing cars. It was miniature golf, but it was also a crazy visionary art theme park. He built his masterpiece, Goofy Golf, in Florida it opened in the summer of 1959. By the time the late 1950s arrived, Lee was ready to take miniature golf and blow it up to Hollywood blockbuster size. Lee began building dinosaurs and other odd creatures in the late 1940s, at his older brother's Pee Wee Golf in California. It would have been nice if the game had a wider variety of course motifs and more characters to play as (you can only choose to be a boy or girl) and a better defined sense of humor, but these are essentially quibbles with a very solid title. Then along came Lee Koplin. Computer miniature golf may not sound like an addicting game, but Goofy Golf Deluxe will keep you coming back for more. The game will also play on any PowerPC system and does so spectacularly on an iMac. The simple mouse control, support for up to four players, and the decidedly non-violent nature of the game makes for a very family friendly title that is at the same time fun. Miniature golf is a good game for players of virtually any age, so naturally, Goofy Golf Deluxe is as well. Everything is drag and drop and you can build a hole in under five minutes. If you can use a simple paint program, using the designer is easy. The included course designer addresses this and adds a lot to the value of the game. You will pretty quickly play through the included courses and the free courses available at the Squeegee Software web site, so expandability is definitely an issue. ![]() As the game is all done in a top down perspective, judging elevation can also be difficult until you get used to understanding which shade of green is incline and which is decline. There are a wide variety of holes to play, with a good selection of obstacles including windmills, the aforementioned dragon and frog, water hazards, boxing gloves, canons, elevation changes, bridges, pipes and an octopus, but after the forth or fifth viewing, the dragon just gets tiring. The game play in Goofy Golf is good, but not perfect. ![]() Players that prefer keyboard control also have that option. You can control the strength of the swing by holding the mouse down longer. Controlling Goofy Golf Deluxe is simple, rotate your mouse to angle your club and click to swing. The character's golfer, the courses and the animated obstacles are all done in clay animation style and truly lend themselves to this type of humorous game. Graphically, the game harkens back to a simpler time in computer animation. Miniature golf players with aspirations to be greens keepers can also make their own courses with the included course designer. Obstacles include fire breathing dragons, water hazards, and frogs with very sticky tongues. The game has 54 holes to play on three different courses. As far as miniature golf goes, Goofy Golf Deluxe is at the top of the food chain.
